Zamboni DUI- Palo Alto DUI Defense Lawyer

Author: J. Robert Mortland III, esq.

I have seen people arrested in Palo Alto, Mountain View, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale DUI cases for driving numerous strange vehicles while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Included in these strange vehicles were a lawn mower, a wheel chair, a big wheels toy, a hang-glider, and even a horse. However, officers in Minnesota made a DUI arrest for a vehicle that typically doesn’t travel where police patrol- a Zamboni.

Joel Bruss, the 34 year old Zamboni operator, was spotted driving a Zamboni recklessly on the ice at a Minnesota ice rink. Mr. Bruss was weaving all over the ice and even managed to slam the heavy piece of equipment into the barrier walls more than once. Mr. Bruss managed to take over a half hour to complete a job that typically takes ten to fifteen minutes. Mr. Bruss then had an incredibly difficult time parking the machine once he drove it off the ice. He was also slurring his words and not making much sense. The ice hockey coach, Bryan Dornstreich, decided to snitch Mr. Bruss out and call the police to investigate whether Mr. Bruss was under the influence or not.

Police arrived shortly after the coach called and they immediately conducted a record check of Mr. Bruss. When police did a record check of Mr. Bruss, they discovered that he had been convicted for driving while under the influence (DUI) of drugs or alcohol three times previously (once in 2002 and twice in 1999). Officers approached Mr. Bruss and could smell alcohol coming from his system- one party described the smell like the energy drink Red Bull. Officers conducted a field sobriety test to which Mr. Bruss failed. Due to smelling like alcohol and his failed field sobriety tests, the police placed Mr. Bruss under arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Mr. Bruss was then transported to the police station where a blood alcohol test was performed. The test will be submitted to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Lab to determine if charges can be filed against the driver.
